Italy is often overlooking as a ski holiday destination but you would be wrong to do this as Italy has some excellent ski resorts, good value ski accommodation and a strong reputation for being friendly to tourists. The Italian approach to skiing is quite relaxed and they see it very much as a leisure event to be enjoyed with family and friends. This usually involves plenty of eating, drinking and lively après ski. The Italian ski resorts can get busy at weekends as locals hit the mountain to enjoy the snow. Ski holidays in Italy usually center around either the Milky Way ski area or the Dolomites Superski area. Both areas offer a huge variety of skiing suitable for all levels of skiers and snowboarders.
It is fair to say that Italian ski resorts are best suited to beginner and intermediate skiers looking for a good value and enjoyable ski holiday. You will find the Italian approach to skiing less intense than some other Alpine areas but if it’s extreme skiing that you are looking for that can also be tracked down.
Italy offers some charming ski villages with traditional ski accommodation, local pizzeria’s and tasty trattoria’s around every corner. There is no storage of après ski bars and also plenty of nightclubs to dance the night away.
Italian ski resorts host an excellent mix of chalets and ski apartments to rent. You can choose from self catering accommodation or a fully catered chalet depending on what you need. The Italians are known for their hospitality so you are guaranteed a great ski holiday with the best of accommodation and cuisine.
Here at allChalets we offer a wide selection of Italian ski accommodation. Our range of chalets includes everything from budget self-catering ski apartments to high end luxury ski chalets with ski-in ski-out, private pools and hot tubs. We can offer small cosy studios or large chalets suitable for groups or family ski holidays. Use our filters on the left of the page to find the perfect ski chalet in Italy.
The 2 most popular ski areas in Italy are the Milky Way which offers over 400km of linked pistes, and the Dolomites Super Ski area which has more than 1200 km of pistes, although not all interlinked. The main resorts in the Milky Way are Cesana, Claviere, Sansicario, Sauze d'Oulx and Sestriere. Montgenevre which is actually in France is also part of the Milky Way domain.
The Milky Way ski area is one of the most popular ski areas in Europe. The area offers high altitude skiing up to 2820m with a variety of pistes weaving through 2 countries and providing excellent skiing for all levels and abilities. The area was host to the 2006/7 Turin winter Olympics and has been much improved in recent years. Montgenevre and Calviere are quite popular with families and offer good ski accommodation and childcare options. Both of these resorts have beginners and nursery slopes close to the village so it is easy to organize all the family. If you are looking for somewhere a little livelier with plenty of après ski options then you should check out Sauze d’Oulx as it has a good selection of bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Regardless of which ski resort you choose you will find a good selection of ski apartments and chalets, and all the resorts are well linked allowing you to explore all areas.
The Dolomites Superski area is in the north east of Italy bordering Austria. It includes 12 different ski resorts and 1200km of ski runs on just one skipass. The ski resorts in the SuperSki area include Cortina d'Ampezzo, Plan de Corones, Alta Badia, Alpe di Siusi / Val Gardena, Val di Fassa / Carezza, Arabba / Marmolada, Sextner Dolomiten-Alta Pusteria, Valle di Fiemme / Obereggen, S. Martino di Castrozza / Passo Rolle, Valle Isarco, Trevalli-Moena / S. Pellegrino / Falcade, Civetta.
The Dolomiti Superski area offer lots of skiing for all levels of skiers and snowboarders. With 1,200m of pistes the area is the largest single lift pass ski area in the world. Be warned however that not all of the 1200km of pistes are inter-linked with ski lifts. You will have to take ski buses to reach certain areas. The area includes the ‘Sella Ronda’ ski circuit, which is a giant loop that connects four valleys in the Sella mountain range. The circuit can be completed in one day but it is advisable to set off before 10am so that you reach the final pass before 3.30pm. The loop is particularly popular with intermediate skiers, and offers some excellent slopes and beautiful alpine scenery. There is always a great sense of satisfaction to sit down to a hot wine after completing the full circuit in one day. You can ski the circuit is either direction.
Aside from the Milky Way and the Dolomites there are a couple of other ski resorts located in the Italian Alps that are well worth visiting. Two of the most popular are Cervinia and Courmayeur.
Cervinia is one of the highest ski resorts in Italy with runs up to 3883m and spectacular views of the Matterhorn in Switzerland. Located in the Aosta valley the ski domain links the Italian villages of Breuil Cervinia and Valtournenche together with Zermatt in Switzerland and gives 360km of linked skiing across 2 countries. Both Cervinia and Zermatt also offer summer skiing on high altitude glaciers.
Courmayeur is also located in the Aosta Valley and lies just below Mont Blanc on the Italian side of the Alps. The resort has a lively atmosphere with amazing scenery dominated by the Mont Blanc. The village in located at 1224m with the ski pistes rising to 2700m. With over 100km of runs there is plenty skiing for all levels and also a link into the nearby Chamonix Vallee Blanche area. Located close to the Mont Blanc tunnel it is also easy to access the French ski resorts in the Chamonix Valley.
