Borovets Ski Resort
Borovets is one of the top ski resorts in Bulgaria. It is in fact the oldest Bulgarian ski resort and started life as the kings hunting lodge in the late 1800’s. Since then however Borovets has developed into a top quality ski resort with excellent skiing for skiers and snowboarders of all levels.
The resort is located at 1350m altitude in the Rila mountains and surrounded on all side by dense pine forests. A lot of the ski runs in Borovets are tree lined making for a beautiful ski holiday. The ski resort is just 1 hour transfer from Sofia airport which gives it one of the shortest airport transfer times of any ski resort in Europe. The resort has over 60km of downhill pistes and 25 km of cross country trails.
The resort is divided into 3 main ski areas called, Rila, Yastrebets and Markudjik. Several of the pistes run right into the center of the village meaning you can ski home in the afternoon to enjoy the après ski. The Rila area contains a selection of beginner areas and a few blues and reds. This area is conveniently located in the village and makes it easy for families to ski together.
The Yastrebets area offer some of the best ski runs in the resort with a selection of challenging red and black runs that will suit both intermediate and expert skiers. For an extra challenge there are a number of off piste tree runs between the Yastrebets ski runs where you can test your skills between the pine trees. Both the Rila and Yastrebets runs are covered by snow cannons ensuring reliable snow cover for your ski holiday in Borovets.
The highest runs are located at 2550m in the Markudjik ski area. Here you can choose from easy greens and blues for the beginners or reds and blacks for more advanced skiers and boarders. For those looking for off piste and free riding the Markudjik area offers unlimited possibilities in what it probably the best off piste bowl in Bulgaria. It is worth noting that if you are planning to go off piste in dangerous areas like the Avalanche bowl or Musala hunt area it is definitely recommended to bring a ski guide.
Finally there is the Musala Pathway a fabulous forest run from the Markudjik area right back to Borovets village. Officially marked as a blue run it is suitable for skiers of all abilities but there a number of adventurous detours for those looking for more of a thrill. Borovets also offer night skiing just in case you haven’t had enough snow time during the day.
Overall Borovets has something to offer for everyone considering a ski holiday in Bulgaria. There is plenty of skiing, cheap prices and some get après ski.
Borovets Accommodation
Borovets offers all types of ski accommodation including hotels, ski apartments and chalets to rent. A lot of the hotels are older style so it is usually recommended to book a ski apartment or chalet in one of the more modern complexes. You can choose from accommodation right in the center if you want to be close to the après ski or alternatively if you are looking for a more peaceful ski holiday pick one of the accommodations located in the forest just outside the center of the ski resort. Most of the best ski accommodation in Borovets is located a little outside the resort with ski buses to bring you to the ski lifts.
Borovets Apartments
There is a very good select of modern ski apartments in Borovets. If you choose a Borovets apartment to rent then you should check for facilities such as swimming pools, saunas, Jacuzzis, fitness areas and bars and bistros. Again you can choose for apartments close to the slopes or if you are looking for luxury apartments in Borovets there are several apartment complex located in the forests just outside the resort.
Borovets Chalets
If you’re a looking for a luxury chalet holiday but want to manage your budget then a Borovets chalet rental is definitely worth considering. Most Borovets ski chalets come as self catering chalets although there are one or two catered chalets also available. You can have a really enjoyable ski holiday in Borovets if you choose a chalet with pool and hot tub. Summer in Borovets
In summer Borovets has a huge amount of mountain activities to enjoy. The climate in summer is very pleasant with an average temperature around 24 degrees and lots of sunshine. The Borovets mountain bike park is the largest and most popular in Bulgaria. It regularly hosts both local and international competitions. The mountain bike park offers challenging downhill runs for the more experienced but at the same time there are lots of gentle forest trails for a more relaxing ride.
Walking, hiking and climbing are also very popular with walking trips to the Musala peak or the Seven Rila Lakes one of the must see attractions. Fishing and water sports on the nearby Lake Iskar can be very enjoyable. Wake boarding and waterskiing are also available on the lake with qualified tuition on hand if you want to improve your wakeboarding technique. Quad bikes, atvs and jeeps safaris can be arranged directly with your accommodation provider and offer a unique way to enjoy the Rila Mountains.
You can also pop into the local spa village of Belchin Bani which has several open air swimming pools with mineral water and other attractions such as karting and paintballing. All in all a summer holiday in Borovets can being as relaxing or as exciting as you desire. Check directly with your Borovets accommodation provider as most provide a full range of activities to keep you busy in Borovets during the summer. For cultural activities or even shopping a trip to Sofia which is just an hour away is highly recommended and if you have time it is well worth visiting the Rila monastery.
