About Zermatt
Skiing & Snowboarding in Zermatt
In choosing your skiing accommodation for your European ski vacation it is essential to consider what each resort has to offer. Zermatt has 3 main interconnected ski areas (over 200kms of runs) of its own and is also linked to Cervinia and Valtournenche in Italy (another 200kms of runs), together these make up the "Matterhorn Ski Paradise", one of the most exciting ski areas in all the Alps.
The mix of runs is great, scenery is breathtaking, off-piste possibilities are excellent (depending on conditions), skiing accommodation is top notch and mountain restaurants and aprs-ski bars are exceptional. Few ski vacations in Europe can match what Zermatt has to offer. The highest lift is at over 3,800m giving an impressive vertical drop of over 2,200m and snow on the upper runs is guaranteed all year round including in summer!
To make things easy, you may order your ski-pass ahead of your Zermatt ski vacation through us: it will be waiting for you when you get there and won't cost you a penny more! No need to join the new arrival queues at the ticket office... Your passes will be waiting for you in your skiing accommodation on your arrival.
All key runs benefit from extensive snow-making equipment to boost snow conditions as needed, which together with its glaciers makes Zermatt completely snow-sure. Zermatt also has its own terrain park, boarder-cross, halfpipe and cross-country circuit. The formidable lift system minimises waiting times. Our guide can show you the way round all the ski areas and mountain restaurants or, in good conditions, provide you with endless untouched powder snow!Your pass ma y include either just Zermatt or both Zermatt & Cervinia providing you with unlimited access to the whole of the Matterhorn Ski Paradise domain, click here for prices.
Last season, the Matterhorn Express lift was extended from resort level all the way to Trockener Steg at 2,900 metres altitude; this means that you can get to the heart of the Matterhorn Paradise area without changing once, enjoying a comfortable journey seated in eight-person bubbles.
Also, the Leisee additional beginners area just below Sunnega with its own lifts has proved a big hit
On the Italian side, Cervinia and Valtournenche have built 5 new high-speed chairlifts, replacing existing tows
Summer Activities in Zermatt
In summer, in addition to the extensive walking, hiking, and mountaineering possibilities there are a number of less common pursuits which we and our guests enjoy in Zermatt throughout the summer. Out team would be glad to advise you and help book any or all of the activities listed below.
Skiing and Snowboarding - The summer skiing is extensive: 1 cable-car, 6 ski-lifts and 1 six-man chair cover 21km of pistes and 1,000 vertical metres of natural snow. There is also a superb fun-park with a half-pipe, numerous kickers, boxes and other jibs.
Hiking - There are 400 km of walking and hiking trails around Zermatt, taking from 30 minutes to one or more days, going from gentle larch forests to the foot of millennial glaciers.
Mountain Lake Swimming - There are a dozen small lakes around Zermatt's mountains. Best for swimming are the Leisee lake (next to Sunnegga) and the Grunsee lake.
Tree top fun park - There is an extensive fun park consisting of long fly wires and a series of tree top obstacles. Routes of varying levels of difficulty may be selected, starting with kids aged four and up, to experts, all with the safety of a harness and fixed line.
Beach volley ball - The tournament grade sand pitch is in the centre of the village.
Fixed Rope Climbing Routes - On the cliffs above the train station there are three fixed rope routes of varying difficulty, from SK2 (suitable for children from 10 years old, duration 1 hours) to SK4 (medium difficulty, duration 5 hours). You'll need a harness and dual carabiner set both of which can be rented. If this is your first time, we recommend hiring a guide.
Mountain biking Whether you take a cable car up and ride down, or do the full work-out by cycling up to 3,100 metres, Zermatt's mountain biking possibilities are vast. Many sport shops rent bikes.
Downhill Trailscooter - Take one of these scooters with big soft tyres in the cable-car up to Schwarzsee and speed back down the mountain trails to the valley, as often as you can in one day. The ultimate challenge for thrill seekers.
Tandem paragliding - Tandem flights lasting between 10 and 45 minutes with a qualified pilot offer spectacular views and sensations. Any age from 3 to 96.
Fishing - The opportunity of fishing in the Alps is exceptional as it is very seldom permitted. In Zermatt you can learn or practise fly fishing (casting the line with a flick of the rod) for mountain trout in an Alpine lake.
Tennis - There are numerous outdoor courts available throughout the village.
Activities mainly for kids:
Trampoline - 4 trampolines with harnesses and bungees enable you to jump 8 metres high and do flips in complete safety. Great fun for kids.
Fun Ball Shoot - A family game for up to four: shoot at each other with harmless soft balls.
Football and mini-football - There is a 45 x 80m pitch available for rent, plus fenced-off mini pitches 24 x 15m suitable for various foot- and basket-ball games.
Children's Playgrounds - Three different playgrounds with swings, slides, etc. are dotted around the village while one is by the Leisee lake, at the top of the Sunnegga Express.
