Our chalet is located at the foot of Montchavin in the small hamlet of Montorlin. It is a converted farmhouse with superb views across the valley and on to Mont Blanc. Full of charm and ambiance with pretty little streets and alleys and a 17th century church, the hamlet is quiet and rural but close to the action. We drive our guests the 3 minutes to the lifts when you're ready in the morning; and collect you whenever you choose.

Set on the small village square, the house is an intriguing combination of old beams and stone walls and modern open plan spaces of glass and wood. The 6 bedrooms sleep 12 - 14 guests, with cots available on request.

Ground Floor: Double with en suite shower room. Family suite comprising large double bedroom with picture windows and four poster; through to bedroom with bunk beds; through to en suite bathroom.

First Floor: double with en suite shower and loo; twin with white washed walls; double with built-in 4 poster; twin with curtained Savoyard beds.

A spiral stone staircase connects the floors, leading up to the huge open plan 'loft' living area that takes up the entire top floor of the house. The sitting area has sumptuously big, squashy sofas and is a great place to take afternoon tea and to relax after dinner. Books, games, CDs, Digital TV and DVDs are on hand for rainy days or lazy afternoons. The kitchen and dining area has glass doors leading onto the large balcony with its sweeping views across the rugged miles of the Tarentaise, with Mont Blanc in the distance. The cellar underneath the house is a general utility room and boot room, and has storage for your skis or snowboards.

The Chalet Service:
We will provide you with the best of the traditions of a typical Chalet Skiing holiday, plus some of our own. On your arrival, over tea and biscuits, we will take you through everything you need to know about the resort and the chalet and then, when you're ready, we'll show you around the resort village and help you sort out the essentials. Lift passes, ski and boot hire and lessons can all be arranged in Montchavin and your hosts will help you do this. Lessons can also be arranged in advance.

The Catering:
Breakfast:
As well as a range of cereals, croissants, breads and jams there is a daily changing menu of cooked breakfasts on offer, including bacon, eggs, porridge, and pancakes. One day a week a cold breakfast will be set out for you the night before for you to serve yourselves.

Afternoon tea:
Indulge yourselves - Liza makes great cakes. (Last season's favourite - a close contest between Lemon Drizzle, Banana cake and Chocolate Gateau). Tea and cakes will be ready for you from 4pm, 6 days a week. On cold days we make mulled wine or hot chocolate toddies, served in the cosy sitting room. On sunny days you may prefer to take tea on the balcony and admire the views. An honesty bar is available all day long on the balcony, where you can help yourself to soft drinks or beer.

Evening meal:
The evening meal is the main event of the day, after your skiing adventures of course. A superb 3 course meal is served at the communal dining table facing the picture windows. A typical menu might include Grilled Goats Cheese on Walnut Bread; Pork Stuffed with Toulouse Sausages and Prunes; and a Chocolate Roulade, with a vegetarian option of a Nut and Wild Mushroom Wellington. Wine is included with all meals.

One day a week your hosts will have a day off, giving you the opportunity to sample the local restaurants in Montchavin or Les Coches.

About Montchavin

La Portette is in the world-renowned ski resort of PARADISKI. Our resort village of Montchavin is 1.7kms by road from the chalet, and our private minibus shuttles you there on demand.

We are on the La Plagne side of Paradiski. One chair lift and a short blue run brings you to the VANOISE EXPRESS cable car across to Les Arcs.

In total there are 425kms of pistes to explore.

La Plagne
La Plagne is a vast state-of-the-art ski area that covers 220 kilometres of groomed pistes, serviced by 108 lifts. The 132 runs range from the top of the Bellecote glacier at 3417m to the tree lined slopes of the lower villages at 1250m. There are miles of blue and red runs and some good beginners slopes with free drag lifts and gentle gradients; plus some superb and testing black runs, and the off piste is extensive and not tracked out. Guided off piste expeditions can be arranged taking you away from the crowds into the unspoilt Ponturin valley.

Montchavin
Within the La Plagne boundaries are 10 resort villages, all with their own character and importantly their own facilities. Spread across the mountain, they are linked by efficient lift services. Montchavin is a traditional Savoyard village, surrounded by apple orchards and rooted in a farming tradition that predates the skiing industry by several hundred years. The resort has restaurants and bars, a cinema, shops and 2 ski schools. Just above is the newer resort village of Les Coches, linked by lifts and a resort bus, with more restaurants and its own ski schools.

A gentle slope in the bowl of the village has a free draglift for beginners and a children's snow park. The lifts whiz you up past pretty tree lined tracks to the open spaces of La Plagne. Snow cannons and the direction of the slopes ensure the lower runs are kept open all season. In misty or snowy conditions the tree lined slopes can offer the best visibility.

Les Arcs
If you like to rack up those miles, you can choose to ski Les Arcs as well as La Plagne with the Paradiski lift pass. Previously only accessible from La Plagne by a long road trip, with the new 200 person cable car you can get there from Montchavin in 15 minutes. With 200 km of groomed pistes serviced by 76 lifts you will truly be able to make sure that you never ski the same terrain twice.

Beginners
If this is your first skiing holiday (or just the first in a long while) then relax and let us sort everything out for you. We will book your skiing or snowboarding lessons (choose between private lessons, either by yourself or with friends, or group lessons). When you arrive we'll come with you to get you kitted out with boots and skis or snowboard; and we'll take you to your first lesson, where your lift pass will be waiting for you. At the end of the day we'll collect you and you can relax back at the chalet with like minded people, and tell tall tales of your amazing prowess on the snow.

Intermediates
You will be in heaven, with miles of cruisy blues and reds to practice on and even, if you're feeling brave, lots of gentle off piste to try out tucked between the marked runs. Ask us to book you more lessons to perfect your technique; or set your own agenda. As you can explore practically the whole resort on blue pistes, the only limit is your stamina...

Experts
Warm up with a vertical drop of 2000 metres, before heading off to find some powder. Once you've explored the black runs and enjoyed the mogul fields, why not book a guide for the day and have an off-piste adventure in the beautiful and unspoilt Ponturin Valley, coming home by the Vanoise Express? Or go off heliskiing, ice climbing, or ski touring..... Talk to us about what you want to do and we will arrange it in advance.

La Portette

Just come back from a week skiing la plagne and staying at La Portette. Andy and Liza make wonderful hosts and the food and cake after a hard days skiing were amazing. The chalet is located in a village just below montchavin. The hosts drop you off and pick you up from the slopes each day and even picked up us and dropped us off at Aime for our transfers to and from the resort. All in all had an amazing time and would highly recommend.
