About St Jean d'Aulps
Between Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc, and at the foot of the majestic Roc d'Enfer mountain whose summit is at 2 244m, St Jean d'Aulps is a typically Haut-Savoyard village.
The Haute-Savoie department is situated in the Rhone-Alpes region of eastern France, with Annecy as its capital town, the border with Switzerland to the north and the border with Italy to the east.
Rhône-Alpes is a region located in the south east of France. Its climate is renowned for being really variable. If summers are hot, they stay quite humid, winters are for their part quite cold due to the mountainous topography. Situated close to the Alps but also to the Massif Central mountains, and not far from the Mediterranean Sea, Rhône-Alpes climate is a blend of multiple influences.
Thus a certain warmth is coming over the land whilst in the mountains the weather is tougher with cold, long and snowy winters. Summers are pretty hot because of some Mediterranean influences.
Rhône-Alpes benefits from 1,976 sunshine hours a year. If this French region is quite sunny, it can also be dry in the south.
Activities near St Jean d'Aulps
Maison Deux Cent is in La Grande Terche - the village clustered around the main gondola of the Roc d'Enfer ski area, part of the Portes Du Soleil. It's less than a 90 minute drive from Geneva Airport. We like the double hundred at Maison Deux Cent. It gaves us our name as that's our house number. And it's also handy because the ski lift, bars, restaurants, supermarket & bus stop are 200m away!
In the winter, ski where the locals ski. In our opinion, it's the hidden gem of the whole area as it just doesn't get the queues. This is particularly great for families. For those more adventurous, it means you've got your own little powder stash when the snow falls!
There are 23 pistes, served by 18 lifts with a total of pisted area of 50KM. The area has invested heavily in snow-making, ensuring good coverage when nature falls short, with over 100 snow canons. The ski school is provided by Ecole du Ski Français. Best of all, you can ski-in, ski-out - snow permitting of course!
Drop down the mountain and you will find the picturesque village of Saint-Jean d'Aulps.
Drive, or bus, 15 minutes and you'll be at the Ardent Gondola, which is one of the fastest ways to explore the Portes du Soleil. It's a high speed cable car that runs to the base of Les Linderets - the pefect point to venture off into Avoriaz, Chatel or Switzerland.
In the summer, you can explore the forests and valleys round out of the front door. World-class mountain biking is just 15 minutes away in Morzine where 21 lifts give access to over 650km of tracks during the MTB summer season.
Lac du Montriond is 15 minutes away by car and you can swim, paddle board, canoe or just picnic at this beautiful mountain lake. Explore other attractions in the Vallée d’Aulps and its heritage, history and panoramas including the Aulps Abbey, Lindarets goat village and the Devil’s Bridge Gorges.
There's a full diary of events in Summer and Winter seasons.
